Care Instructions
Their upkeep is straightforward, and cut stems can last up to several weeks. Carnations should have four to six hours of sunlight a day. Good quality soil medium with good drainage. Water plants two to three times a week. If the petals or foliage begin to turn yellow, it's a sign of overwatering.
Features
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) flower petals are edible, (when not sprayed with chemicals) and sweet with a mild flavor of nutmeg and clove. Some people describe the taste as peppery and slightly tangy. Carnation stems are inedible. Since the seventeenth century, liquor makers have distilled carnation petals to use in the French liqueur chartreuse.
Applications
As well as used for garlands, confetti and cut flowers, carnation flowers can be added whole, or the petals can be sprinkled over a variety of fresh and cooked dishes. In addition, separate the petals and use as a raw garnish to elevate cakes, salads and pies. The petals can also be pulled off the flower and used to toss through salads
