Herbal and Medicinal Plants - Society garlic - Tulbaghia violacea
Society garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) is a fast growing plant that forms clumps reaching 30 inches in height. This plant grows well in wet or dry circumstances and makes a good rock garden or container plant. The plant has gray-green narrow leaves that are somewhat evergreen in warmer climates. Society Garlic gives off a garlic scent and has been said to help rid gardens of unwanted critters! The flowers are lilac in color and the plant will bloom from early summer to early fall. The leaves of Variegated Society Garlic are green edged in white or choose the green only leaf.
The delicate flowers also last very well as a cut flower if you dont mind the mild garlic scent :-)
Yes, it's safe to eat. Both flowers and leaves are edible and add a mild garlic flavor to any dish. The flowers are often used in soups and salads. The leaves can be added to dishes that benefit from chives; just chop them up and add them to soups, salads and sauces.
